Here are two of the Spanish-style mantilla combs she used, back in the 1960s. At that time, all the Catholic ladies of Albuquerque wore head coverings to church, often lacy mantilla shawls held above the head by carved combs.

My mother’s combs were antiques even then. To commemorate these combs, I’ve immortalized them with this legend, which comes printed on handmade paper with the purchase of either comb.

Here is the Legend of the Mantilla Comb:

Long ago in the Cantabria region of Spain, a woman named Lita and her lover Ricardo hid their passion from her villagers, because they didn't regard Ricardo as worthy of her beauty. But he gave her a mantilla comb he had carved from a sea turtle shell, and would play his four-stringed rabel (an instrument made of wood and goat skin) for her secretly and their love grew stronger. They made plans to elope just as soon as Ricardo returned from a fishing trip. But tragically Ricardo was lost in a furious storm, and only his rabel floated to shore, soaked and useless. All she had left was the comb. The legend continues that if you hold a mantilla comb in the gentle wind, you can hear the plaintive sounds of Ricardo's lost melodies playing between the tines of the comb.

From society girl and "First Maid" in the Strawberry Festival in Humboldt, Tennessee, in 1949 she eloped at age 17 and -- much to her chagrin and disappointment-- began a hard new life in Lamy, New Mexico. Her husband was a cattle trader (some say, rustler) and sometimes Santa Fe Railroad employee. Later, her time living in Shiprock, NM, brought her in contact with trading posts and pawn shops and she began her collection of unique Native American jewelry. She also began collecting antique jewelry and other vintage items.

An incredibly talented professional honkey-tonk piano player, she entertained thousands at nightclubs, dinner theaters, and pizza parlours; and was featured at the Banjo Spectacular in San Francisco in the 1960s.

She became a local expert on vintage beads and began designing her own creations from imported and antique beads; and her necklaces, bracelets and earrings were carried in galleries in New Mexico and Japan.

Her collections are timeless.

Rare find of vintage rhinestone bling jewelry collection from the estate of "Rambling Rose" Hensley, professional musician and jewelry designer. Two necklaces, a Weiss bracelet, and four pair of clip on and screw on earrings. Brilliant, high-quality clear rhinestones only.

On Treasure Thursday I describe the deeper, ancient understanding of one of Jesus’s parables.

These mugs were originally commissioned by Dr. Steven Collins, world-famous archaeologist and discoverer of the biblical city of Sodom, for use in events related to his Museum of the Bible in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Informational Demonstration: View the video on Etsy to see from my own private collection two authentic oil lamps from Israel from the time of Christ. See how the larger oil lamp for household use could tip and spill out oil, but the smaller hand-held "flashlight" version could be carried at night. Thus in the Parable of the Virgins (Matthew 25) there was a need for an equally unspillable flask to carry along to periodically refill the "flashlights." THE POTTERY ITEM I AM SELLING IS NOT AN ANCIENT ARTIFACT, BUT ON THE DISH YOU ARE BUYING, THE ARTIST DEPICTS THE SMALLER "FLASHLIGHT" KIND OF LAMP.

It is therefore a symbol of personal responsibility and preparedness.

The Legend of the Lamp

Matthew 25

1) Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

This parable teaches us that all our assets -- our time, our money, our talents -- must be carefully managed with care and alertness so that we will be ready, with all the resources we need to go out to meet Jesus when He comes again, and we will no longer need any of our own lights as He will light the entire universe forever.

Of course, that is one type of lamp used in the Bible, but everyday household lamps were quite different — basically just bowls to hold olive oil and a wick. Those which were used inside the home were usually round-bottomed and wide-open at the top, because they sat on a stand (Matthew 5:15.)

Not the kind of thing you’d want to take outside in the dark — too big and too liable to spill! No, you’d want something smaller, more portable, and more enclosed.

In the listing, I use some authentic first-century oil lamps that I own, in a short video, to show the difference between the two types of lamps. I also quote the parable of Jesus where virgins waiting for a wedding fall asleep, and some don’t have the extra oil to take along to fill the small, palm-sized first-century “flashlights” (Matthew 25:1-13.)
